Marrakech - The "Waterbiotech" project, financed by the European Union is a model of North-South cooperation, said in Marrakech Cheikh Diop, from Dakar's Institute of environment sciences.

The initiative that proposes innovating solutions to water problems in Africa through the use of biotechnology should be encouraged, said the expert in a statement to MAP as he took part in the 2nd international conference on "Biotechnology for sustainable water-supply in Africa" held in Marrakech this Jan.8-10.

The two-year project helps to share experience and cooperation between research centers and non-governmental organizations of the North and the South, he added, noting that although African countries have different experiences in water treatment, they all have a strong will to move forward in this field.

He went that Morocco and Tunisia are the two African countries that have succeeded in developing water treatment, stressing that Morocco's great experience in the field can be of great help to the other African countries.

The conference on the use of biotechnology for sustainable water supply brought together 150 experts from 17 European and African countries who presented results and recommendations of two years of research and coordination in this field.
