Washington and five European capitals urge Libyan parties to sign UN political agreement

Washington - The US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK urged the parties to the Libyan conflict to sign an agreement presented by the UN in the recent round of political talks in Morocco's Skhirate.

In a joint statement, the six countries welcomed the resumption of talks in Morocco and described the UN proposal as a "a thoughtful, well-balanced basis for agreement that meets the urgent expectations of Libyan people and secures the unity of Libya."

They reiterated support for the UN brokered deal "in order to help ensure that a Government of National Accord and all the new institutions function effectively."

The six countries called on all Libyan decision makers to show "responsibility, leadership and courage," adding that the international community stands ready to provide humanitarian, economic and security assistance to a united Libya once a new government is established.

They also made it clear that the international community will hold accountable through sanctions those who threaten Libya's peace, stability and security.
