On Sunday 13 January in the evening, at the port of Sidi Ifni demonstrators came to express their anger against a brutal intervention of the Spanish navy on the beaches of the Canary Islands, who fired on a small boat, killing Moroccan passengers including some from the region of Sidi Ifni.

The demonstration which was in solidarity with the victims, quickly turned to confrontation with the police.

According to sources on the ground, youths set fire to tires and started throwing stones at the police.

The member of parliament for the region and civil activists accused the security forces of acting too swiftly with force, leaving no opportunity for dialogue to disperse the demonstration and this was not the first time this had occurred.

A number of injuries were reported amongst protesters ,police and auxiliary forces.Sweeps were carried out in the surrounding neighbourhoods where young “troublemakers” were arrested.
