"US remains committed to supporting Tunisia in its democratic transition” Hilary Clinton

US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton met with Tunisia's Foreign Minister Rafif Abdessalem in Washington yesterday. it was their first meeting since the attacks on the American Embassy and the American School.In their statements before the meeting they restated their countries' relationship with Mrs Clinton calling for action against extremists.
Mrs Clinton began by saying that "“The United States remains committed to supporting Tunisia as it deals with the current situation and continues its democratic transition.” She affirmed that President Obama and herself had no higher concern than the safety of  US diplomatic staff and all governments have a duty to protect embassy's and their personnel under the Vienna Convention and other international agreements. "Leaders across the world must stand up and be counted in rejecting violence and holding violent actors accountable. "

She said the state Department was working clmosely with the Tunisian government and they were assisting the US Embassy staff in improving protection for the embassy. The US has discussed with  the Tunisian government the importance of bringing the perpetrators of the attack on the embassy to justice, she said. The US will look for ways to ensure the rule of law thouugh out Tunisia for the good of Tunisians.She looked forward to building the US's new partnership with Tunisia and the relationship based on the shared principles of democracy "built on a commitment to nonviolence, to tolerance, and inclusivity for all people, and to upholding the rule of law."

She recalled that Tunisia was the first Arab revolution to restore democracy and had achieved much in a short time.The Tunisian people had worked too hard and sacrificed too much to have their democracy hijacked by violent extremists with their own agenda, she said.  All leaders and people must stand against such extremists around the world.

"As the Tunisian Government takes steps to strengthen security and protect the Tunisian people and economy from extremism and violent agendas, the United States stands ready to help." she affirmed and said that the US was  working closely with Tunisia on the broader shared threat of terrorism, including from groups like al-Qaeda and its affiliates.The US  remained committed to supporting Tunisia she concluded.

Rafik Abdessalem the Tunisian Foreign Minister presented  condolences on the Libyan consulate attack and  he said that the attack on the US embassy in Tunis did not reflect the real Tunisia and he expressed his regret and condemnation over the incident. He assured that the embassy and American shcools and all private and public property would be protected and that stability,political stability and securtiy was a priority for the  government. He made no  other comment on extremists in Tunisia.
