Washington - The conditions set by Algeria for the normalization of its ties and reopening of borders with Morocco reveal a cheap tactic to avoid facing pressing facts on the ground and responding to the international community's concerns regarding the mounting insecurity in the region, Peter Pham, director of the Michael Ansari Center for Africa, told MAP.

Behind these terms hides Algeria's attempt to stir confusion and shy away from the pressing need for an immediate regional security cooperation, in conformity with calls by the international community to fight the Al-Qaeda terrorist groups and cross-border criminal networks which made the region a breeding ground for them, Pham said.

He warned against the dangers of such a stand as Algeria denies its regional responsibilities and commitments vis-à-vis the international community, noting that this deliberate confusion holds hostage security requirements of the region. "When we set fire to the house, we do not care about garbage collection," he said.

Algeria is trying, through this confusion, to shirk its responsibilities, said Pham again, noting that the security situation in the Sahel-Saharan region calls for stronger regional cooperation at all times to face "immediately and without delay" extremist groups that fuel destabilization.
