UN rapporteur commends "meaningful impact" of Moroccan experience in transitional justice

Geneva - UN rapporteur for the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence Pablo de Greiff commended on Monday "the highly meaningful impact" of the Moroccan experience in transitional justice.

The UN rapporteur cited "the gender dimension in the transitional justice process" and keenness to implement the germane resolutions, during a panel held on the sidelines of the Human Rights Council session.

The panel, held by the permanent mission of Switzerland, Argentina and Morocco, took place in the presence of eminent figures, including deputy-high commissioner of human rights Flavia Pansieri, president of the renowned human rights association "grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo" (Argentine) Estela Barnes de Carlotto, head of the committee of enforced disappearances and head of the work group on enforced or involuntary disappearances. 

Morocc's inter-ministerial delegate for human rights Mahjoub El Hiba who presented at the panel session Morocco's experience in transitional justice stressed that "several constitutional, legislative and institutional reforms were adopted, coupled to a bold process from the highest authorities".

He also explained that Morocco adopted a holistic approach by integrating truth-establishment, repair programs, reconciliation process as well as proposals to prevent recurrence. 

The Moroccan official, later told the press, that several countries of the region are seeking to draw inspiration from Morocco's pioneer experience, stressing that the Kingdom has also embarked on efforts to preserve memory and set up institutions dedicated to archives.
