UN 'Deeply Concerned' by Recent Tensions Near Guerguerat

Samedi 6 Janvier 2018

New York (United Nations), 06/01/2018 (MAP) - UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres said, on Saturday, he was "deeply concerned" by the recent increased tensions near Guerguerat, caused by the gross violation by the polisario of the cease-fire signed in 1991.

"The secretary-general is deeply concerned by the recent increased tensions in the Guerguerat area, in the buffer zone," his spokesman Farhan Haq said in a statement.

Guterres said that "the withdrawal of the elements of the polisario front of Guerguerat in April 2017, as well as the previous withdrawal of Moroccan elements from the region, were essential to create an environment conducive to the resumption of dialogue under the auspices of his personal envoy Horst Kohler."

In this context, the secretary-general calls for "the utmost restraint and avoidance of escalating tensions," stressing that civilian and commercial transport "should not be hindered and that no action should be taken that could constitute a change to the status quo of the buffer zone.”
