The UGCAA is the General Union of Algerian traders and craftsmen. It organised a conference in Algiers on the state of fisheries and fisheries sectors in Algeria.Hosted by the President of the Fisheries Committee, member of the UGCAA, Hocine Bellout, it announced the shocking figure.
UGCAA: The Algerian consumes only 1 gram of fish per year
The average  Algerian consumes only a single gram of fish per year, a figure obtained from the calculations of the number of households with purchasing power in Algeria and quantities caught and imported into the country.

As usual in Algeria, comparisons with Morocco soon appear, Hocine Bellout regretted during his presentation that the average Moroccan, has available for his consumption more than 12 kg of fish per year, the average Tunisian consumes 10 kg per year.

Bellout  quoting the Algerian newspaper le Temps, drew a black picture of the fisheries sector in Algeria, he accused the fishing ndustry barons who he called mafia of stifling the sector for the benefit of lucrative contracts for imports causing  unemployment and impoverishment for Algerian fishermen.

"The management of fisheries at the national level is chaotic because of insecurity, corruption, theft and lack of means" cautioned Bellout, adding that fish prices have become increasingly high and opened the way for "the barons who have no connection with the area, which is under a reign of anarchy reign in this sector."

Algeria has 1,200 km of coastline in the Mediterranean and the French colonial legacy of thirty ports from what Hocine Bellout called dilapidated infrastructure.
