Tunis - The General Rapporteur for the Constitution to the National Constituent Assembly (NCA), Habib Khedher said on Friday that the finalisation of the draft Constitution of Tunisia scheduled for Saturday was again delayed at the request of the group of experts conducting a revision of the text.
"The experts requested to extend their work until Wednesday, which caused a slight delay in finalising the draft of the Constitution," said Khedher, a member of the ruling Islamist party Ennahda.
The group of experts - lawyers and linguists in particular - were initially to finish their work to review and discuss with the members of the committee in charge of the drafting by deputies, before 27 April 2013.
The Assembly adopted a non-binding March calendar Fixing April 27, the date of submission of the draft Constitution and providing for its adoption before July 8, 2013.
The main parties were given one year after the election on 23 October 2011 the ANC to draft the new constitution and replace the interim regulations governing the country after the revolution that ousted the former regime in January 2011.
But the work of the ANC has progressed slowly in the absence of a compromise on the nature of the regime, the main sticking point in negotiations.
Islamists call for a pure parliamentary system, while the other parties argue for a mixed regime leaving important powers to the president.
Political parties in talks under the auspices of President Moncef Marzouki Friday suspended their dialogue without reaching a consensus on the future powers of the president and head of government.
To be adopted, the draft constitution must have the support of two thirds of members of the ANC in which Ennahda has 89 elected members amongst 217.
