Tunisia: mausoleums burned across the country!

After the fire at the mausoleum of Manoubia Saida (Tunisia), Sidi Yaakoub Gabes and other shrines in different regions of Tunisia, the attacks continue against mausoleums in the country. The latest is the mausoleum of Sidi Meftah in Jelma governorate, Sidi Bouzid in the center of the country.

After threatening those inside, hooded men equipped with Molotov cocktails and knives, ransacked the mausoleum of Sidi Meftah, looted and destroyed what they found, before setting it on fire.

People who attacked the shrine could religious extremists, according to Tunisian media denouncing the government's silence against the continuous attacks in recent months on Tunisian mausoleums.

On October 22, the Director General of UNESCO condemned the desecration and looting of the Saida Aisha Manoubia mausoleum. Irina Bokova urged the Tunisian authorities to "take all necessary measures to ensure that the cultural heritage sites that carry the memory and identity of the Tunisian people are protected against any act aimed at their integrity."
