Tunisia: President Moncef Marzouki Condemns 'Irresponsible' calls to incite violence.

The Presidency of the Republic strongly condemned on Saturday as "irresponsible" the calls for the murder of artists "launched even in the mosques", reminding that "the freedoms of opinion, expression and artistic creation are irrevocable rights."

"The attempts of some people to take advantage of these liberties to provoke and sow discord must not blind us to their importance as gains of the Revolution to be preserved and reinforced despite all difficulties,"  said  a communiqué of the official Spokesman for the Presidency, TAP reported.

President Marzouki has urged the Ministries concerned to take the necessary legal action against anyone who launched or will launch such calls, "whatever their positions or political or ideological trends," the communiqué adds.

The Presidency of the Republic expressed as well satisfaction at the performance of the police and the army who "imposed the rule of law and contained the last crisis," paying tribute to all the parties that called for peace and for thwarting the plans of the enemies of the Revolution and of national unity.

President Marzouki has cancelled a trip to Brazil in the wake of the violence. Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali said the violence was orchestrated by  members of the previous regime and criminals.

 There was  a protest march against the violence by the Tunisian tourism industry in the centre of Tunis on Habib Bourgiba Avenue on Saturday, La Presse reported. Travel agents,hoteliers and  a  tourism professionals took part  in the protest march saying that the salafist violence and ensuing curfew had dealt a huge blow to tourism just as the industry  was beginning to recover and bookings by tourists had been severly cut back. one tourits guide said  to " order a curfew is like signing the death warrant of tourism."Mouna Koubaa, Secretary General of the Tunisian Federation of Travel Agencies said that the violence had sullied the image of Tunisia as a tourism destination, La Presse reported. Some 400,000 Tunisians earn their livlihood through tourism and their jobs are in jeopardy.

Tourism representatives called for stability and for the security forces to take effective action to save the tourism season.
