Tunisia : Manouba University Dean in court stand off
The Humanities Department Dean Habib Kazdaghli at Manouba University faced a court hearing charged him with assaulting a veiled woman student in his office.He denied the charge, saying he was only defending himself against an agitated student who burst into his office uninvited.

The Dean told AP that he brought a charge first against two vieled woman who burst into his office and rifled his papers. This is part of a long running dispute between secular and salafist members of the university where Salafists have sought to inflict extreme islamist behaviour by force including veils for women on the university campus.
The situation at the university has parralleled the conflict between the secular and islamist elements in society. The salafists are reckoned to amont to 10,000 peole in a population of over 10 million but the Ennhada led government which sympathises with the long repressed Salafists has failed to come up with any measures to resolve the situation even after seriuos riots a few weeks ago.
The failure to protect individual human rights has attracted international attention and the plight of the Dean Habib Kazdaghli has been reported in the Washington Post,Fox News,and ABC News amongst others.
