Tunisia: Government confrontation with media continues.

President of the National union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) Nejiba Hamrouni denounced what she described as a “double standard” of the Government with regard to the media,reported TAP.

“While opening dialogue with the sector’s union , the Government seeks to distort the image of the media and stir up public opinion against them” she underlined.She also spoke of the progress of the negotiations conducted recently between Government representatives and those of the media on the sector’s reform and the establishment of an independent authority of media regulation.
 
Nejiba Hamrouni also pointed to the creation of a committee composed of SNJT members, journalists and media officials to be tasked with publishing a black list of journalists and examining the cases of corruption in the media sector in coordination with representatives of the Prime Ministry, the Interior Ministry and the Tunisian External Communications Agency (ATCE), the organisation used during the Ben Ali era to control national and international media

Rachid Ghannouchi speaking at a press conference said regarding  new appointments in the media,  that the
Ennahda party has not exceeded its powers and that it is not involved in these appointments. However, he said that the government is entitled to terminate appontments if  anyone fails to serve the interests of the State,
"competence is a prerequisite," he said. Regarding the imprisonment of Sami Fehri has said the action against Fehri was for corruption and had nothing to do with the puppet programme which caricatured politicians. He said that he did not have time to watch television programmes like " Attounssia "or" Nessma ".

The confrontation with the media continues and Rachid Ghannouchi said that he had asked a legal firm to file a complaint against The Independent Newspaper in London. On elections he said they would be carried out on a fixed date but that the drafting of the constitution was the responsibility of the Consitutional Assembly. He confirmed that Ennhada remaind committed to a parliamentary form of government where power was shared as widely as possible and Parliament had the last word.
