The overnight stays in classified hotels dropt 12 per cent during the same period bring the occupancy rate
to 34 per cent as against 40 per cent for the same period in 2011. Travel receipts totalled 8 billion dirhams which is up 3.7 per cent  year on year. This is an improvement on 2011  which saw receipts of 4.5 per cent for the whole year as against 6.8 per cent in 2010 Much media attention focused on the Minister of Justice Mustapha Ramid commented during a visit to a  Qoranic school in Marrakech

“People from all over the world come and spend a lot of time sinning and being away from God,” which travel professionals in Morocco and internationally criticised as wrong and highly damaging.

In Tunisia Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali speaking at an  UNTWO international tourism conference in Djerba said "We will respect the traditions of our visitors in their food, and clothing and lifestyle." Tunisia relies on tourism for  7 per cent of its gross domestic product. Visitors and toursim numbers have dropt by more than a third after the revolution.

Some 5 million tourists visited the country last year down from 7 million in 2010. Security fears but radical islamist demonstrations along with strikes and protests  and  violence caused the drop in tourist numbers. Jebali said bookings had improved in 2012.

Tourism in Morocco differs in that Morocco has a highly developed cultural tourism whilst Tunisia continues to rely mainly on seaside vacations. Morocco has not had the prolonged  post revolution disorder that Tunisia has suffered. Both are led by moderate islamic governments who are concerned that fundementalist elements in society who have acquired an increased liberty of expression post Arab Spring, do not jeopardise the tourism industry's recovery  by denying the rights of others in society at a time when the global economy is struggling to recover.
