Timbuktu under control of French and Malian troops

: Franco-Malian forces have taken the city of Timbuktu without a fight during the night of Sunday to Monday,but they were unable to prevent the fire from a library with precious manuscripts by Islamists before they fled.The liberation of Timbuktu is more than symbolic that should mark a turning point in the war against Islamist movement.

The destruction of the Ahmed Baba Institute, containing thousands of priceless manuscripts, was confirmed by  the Mayor of Timbuktu.Hunting Islamists is far from over. "Several terrorist groups have been destroyed or driven further North, the French Ministry of Defence said, according to Reuters.

According to a security source in Mali, the main perpetrators of armed Islamist groups, Iyad Ag Ghaly, leader of Ansar Dine, and the Algerian Abou Zeid, one of the emirs of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), have taken refuge in the mountains near Kidal where Islamist positions were bombed by French aircraft on  Saturday.The French have called on Algeria and Mauritania to close their borders and much will depened on whether their armed forces areable to really seal their borders. The French and Malianf orces will now move on to take Kidal which is the home town of Iyad Ag Gahi head of Ansar Dine.
