The solar potential of the Algerian Sahara will be highlighted by the participants in this three-day meeting aimed at developing a vision of future energy supply based on clean, renewable resources, the President of the organizing committee, Amine Boudghène Stambouli said to APS.

Thematic conferences are proposed in this context by researchers from different countries, particularly Algeria and Japan that are linked by a cooperation program devoted to developing solar technologies.

The Algerian-Japanese program, called SSB (Sahara Solar Breeder ,solar farm or experimental), will also hold an international workshop on Thursday after the second day of this international meeting.

The program was endorsed SSB in August 2010 with the signing of an agreement between the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and the two agencies USTO Japanese (JICA and JST) dedicated to international cooperation, science and technology.

A consortium of six Japanese universities are involved in this initiative alongside USTO, Dr Taher Moulay University of Saida and  a Research Unit in renewable energy in the Sahara at Adrar (URERMS).

Launched in January 2011, the project's realization SSB is scheduled on a five-year period, which at maturity will be made an operating system for delivery of energy produced in the South to the North to feed of desalination plants.

With the range of academic and technology, this operation is entirely funded by the Japanese with a budget of $ 5 million, intended in particular to provide the USTO with a research center on solar technologies, while the Research Unit Adrar and the University of Sidon will each receive a technology platform for the construction of photovoltaic cells and the exploitation of energy.

In addition, the international workshop on the program will be followed by SSB on 17 May, the second Algeria-Japan Academic Symposium to be held under the theme "A sustainable society through science advances," said Mr. Stambouli.

Biosciences (Food and Agriculture), "Energy and the Environment", "Economics, Social Sciences and Humanities" will constitute the three main themes of this symposium initiated in partnership with the University of Tsukuba (Japan) .
