"The President of the Republic Moncef Marzouki received this morning (Thursday) the judge of the court of first instance in Tunis  and was heard as a witness in the murder case of Chokri Belaid,"  the president said.

This short statement gives no further clarification.

The family  of Chokri Belaid assured that Marzouki was informed of threats against the opponent left murdered on 6 February but the spokesman of the Presidency, Adnène Mancer, denied this in February.

"My brother told me "the president contacted me to tell me that I am threatened with death.  The President  offered me protection but I refused because it would amount to (...)  control of "my activities, Abdelmajid Belaid, brother of the deceased told AFP.

"For me, the president knows the sponsors, those who decided to kill Chokri," he added.

A part of the family of the opponent said this weekthey do not to believe the official story that the Salafist movement killed the opponent, accusing the ruling Islamist party, Ennahda, of being behind the assassination.

This crime has plunged  Tunisia into an unprecedented political crisis, causing the Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali to resign last week. The country is still waiting for a new government.
