The campaign has already begun: will Bouteflika be running for a 4th term?

Mardi 1 Janvier 2013

According to political parties, observers believe that President Bouteflika will stand for another than 2014. A conclusion drawn a number of factors including the state of his health, his age (he will be 77 years old in 2014) and his own allusive statements last May in Sétif.
The campaign has already begun: will Bouteflika be running for a 4th term?
Observers are seeking a denial but the entourage of the Head of State and his supporters are adamant that the health of the President is not as worrying as is generally believed. Better, the President is not only in great shape as was evident during the visit of François Hollande, but  he awaits a major marathon in 2013 and 2014.

This is at least what was said yesterday by Abdelkrim Abidat, president of the organization and the National Council of Associations for the protection of youth by hosting a El Moudjahid Forum a meeting in the presence of organized civil society in National Committee supporters and the brother Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Mr. Abidat, author of two books on the political course of Bouteflika during the armed struggle and as president, also presented a 30 minute documentary on the same subject.

The author explained that this short film was dedicated to those who have not had the opportunity to read two books. He wants to stop over "to challenge our conscience for one who has offered his youth and life to the detriment of his health for Algeria which he always  has in his heart."

The film traces the different stages experienced by the country. "National reconciliation, settlement of foreign debt, the honourable position of Algeria in the concert of nations justified by good financial health," concluded the speaker, noting that these achievements were not made without hazards. The speaker says that the journey is far from over. stating that Bouteflika steps for 2013-2014 is it a huge work worthy of a great marathon. Other merits attributed to Bouteflika were mentioned by the speaker including the colossal housing program, control of water resources, the challenge of training and decisions for the care of youth issues.

Mr. Abidat’s conference certainly has the merit of reminding us that Algeria is no longer what it was in 1999, and the Algerian’s living standards have improved significantly, at least in part, though there remains dark areas which continue to mark  the country to this day including social inequalities, corruption, injustice to name a few of them. If Abdelaziz Bouteflika is standing for another term, these issues should be given priority in his agenda.
