Samedi 30 Juin 2012

In an emotionally charged ceremony in Tahrir square yesterday Mohamed Morsi took an oath of office before the Egyptian people pledging his allegiance to them and recalling the long struggle of the Muslim Brotherood from the 1920's uptill 21 January 2012.
The Will of the People is above everyone- Morsi
The crowd called for the downfall of military rule as it has done for so long but Mohamed Morsi will be sworn in at the High Constitutional court as required by the Supreme Armed Forces Council (SCAF) and the constitutional game with SCAF is not over although  Mohamed Morsi insists that he will fight to attain all his powers as president. The dissolution of parliament and the control by SCAF of the budget and the legaslative powers are still in place limiting his room for maneouvre. On the economic front, Morsi sought to assure the business community that he would provide security and stability. He reassured Egypt's 3 million tourism workers that the Muslim Brotehrhood did not intend to halt the flow of tourists and that tourism played a central part in Egypt's economy.

For a candidate who has been criticised for lack of charisma is was a strong and impressive speech watched on TV nation wide. He also said that he would work for the release of   vowed to free all civilians who were tried in military courts since the beginning of the revolution, and also promised to fight for the freedom of the  blind-imam Omar Abdel Rahman who serves is serving a life sentence on terrorism  related charges in the United States reg&arding the 1993 World Trade building bombing. This could affect relations with the United States which has a difficult task in rebuilding relations with a post revolution Islamist Egypt. However it remains to be seen how and when the President will be able to recover all his powers and what powers he is granted in the as yet unwritten constitution. For the moment the need is to resestablish stability as Morsi recognised in his speech.
