The Solar Impulse takes off from Switzerland to Morocco

The co-founder of the project Andre Borschberg was at the controls of the aircraft.Its wings are covered with 12,000 solar cells powering four electric motors with an output of 10 hp each.

Solar Impulse took off with almost two hours behind the scheduled time, due to persistent fog in Payerne. The landing will be at the airport of Madrid-Barajas at 2:00 (0000 GMT) Friday morning.

The explorer and other co-founder of the project Bertrand Piccard will then take  over to fly the aircraft over the Strait of Gibraltar to its final destination, Rabat.

The aircraft, which will cross the Mediterranean for the first time and it will be the final rehearsal for a round the
world tour in 2014, organizers said. The tour will also allow the team to test the aircraft for international air traffic and major airports.The team has been invited to Morocco by the country’s King Mohammed VI to showcase the cutting edge of solar technology.Morocco is about to start construction on a massive solar energy plant at Ouarzazate. The plant will form part of a country-wide solar energy grid with a capacity of 2000 megawatts by 2020, according to AFP.
