The rehabilitated port was launched on Sunday  by the Chief Executive of SNIM, Mohamed Abdallahi Ould Oudaa Ambassador and Head of EU Delegation in Mauritania, Hans Geog-Gerstenlauer, Pana reported.

This funding has also contributed to the renewal of the Zouerate railway (iron mining site) - Nouadhibou to 150 km "to allow the transport of heavier loads and significantly reduce technical incidents due to wear," according the statement.

The rehabilitation of ore port of Nouadhibou has several positive implications for SNIM, including an increase in exports  which will increase from 10 tons of iron present to 20 million tons of iron in 2013, Pana concludes.

Mauritania is the second largest exporter of iron ore in Africa, the Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière de Mauritanie (SNIM) produces approximately 11 MT of iron ore per annum, with production targeted to expand to 18 MT in 2014 and 25 MT in 2018.
