Thousands of protesters called for the downfall of Mr. Morsi’s government in Cairo, while others ransacked the offices of the president’s former party in Suez, Alexandria and other cities,The New York Times reported. In a speech to his supporters the president said  "“God’s will and elections made me the captain of this ship.”

Eggypt risks descending in to turmoil and chaos again. State Department spokeswoman Virgina Nuland observed  that  one of the aimsof the revolution was " to ensure that power would not be overly concentrated in the hands of any one person or institution.”  she said that Egypt needed a constitution that included checks and balances, which would  respect fundamental freedoms and  individual rights.

An advisor to the president who is a leading member of the Coptic community resigned yesterday because of the decree . Secular groups in Egyptian society are fearful that an islamist dominated constituent assemby will draft  a constitution which enshrines sharia and threatens their way of life.Precisely the same confrontation is taking place in Tunisia. In Libya the effort to draft a new consitution  has yet to get underway but it appears in these countries that the struggle to decide the way a new society will evolve is facing severe difficulty and the rise of islamist parties and their salafist counterparts is blocking the development of a free society in line with universal human rights.

At a press conference  in Cairo on Saturday, Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud  the formidable chief prosecutor who Mr Morsi has tried to remove before and is now unilaterally replacing said that he is willing to go to court to dispute Moris's decision and warned "againt any attempt to disrupt the work of the judicial system". President Morsi said that his assumption of these extra powers is only temporary and is meant to securethe aims of the revolution and democracy but his detractors point out that this was the argument of his predecessor and opposition politician Mohamed ElBaradei  charges that Mr Morsi has "appointed himself Egypt's new pharaoh".
