Tangier: the new marina begins to emerge

The progress of work on the new marina in the project of conversion of Tanger city reached 60%.The first phase of transformation of the existing fishing harbour marina has been more than 30 % completed.

According to data from the Company's development of the port of Tangier (TAS), responsible for the conversion of port platform and leisure cruises, work for the construction of new fishing harbour, next to the port city of Tangier westside, has been 40 pc completed.

The future fishing port will provide some 1,900 professionals linear meters of quays, 13 hectares of land and 13 hectares of filled basin.

The creation of the new marina, east of the port, and the conversion of the existing fishing harbour will give the port 1,610 moorings for yachts to be one of the largest marinas Mediterranean in 2016.

In addition to its maritime component, the conversion project focuses on an urban dimension to open the city of Tangier for its port and develop as a strategic area, between the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier bay, the old medina and the new city.

 

The site will eventually have a water front with rich and lively public spaces, cultural facilities (seaside, convention centre, museum, multiplex), hotels and shopping areas and restaurants.

The project also focuses on the rehabilitation of the historic sites surrounding the walls and the strengthening of the cultural dimension of tourism in the city of the Detroit.

The conversion of the port of Tangier city will require a total investment of 7 billion Dirhams, including $ 5 billion for urban components and 2 billion for port components.

Strengthening the leisure dimension through this conversion project aims to benefit the region growing importance of this sector in the Mediterranean basin, an area with some 1,000 marinas, including 90% in the countries of North Shore, including Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Croatia.

These countries have a total capacity of 350,000 potential tourists, while the leisure fleet is more than 600,000 boats, of which 60,000 of them crossing the Strait of Gibraltar each year.
