Tanger Med 2: The first phase carried out at 65%

During a press conference held in the port of Tanger Med Port Authority (TMPA), Mr. Arjouan said that the first phase focuses on the realisation of a terminal of 1,200 m quay length and with a capacity of 2.2 million TEUs.

The terminal, which will enter service in 2015 with an investment of more than 8 billion dirhams and the conession will be allocated to the port operator Marsa Maroc for a period of 30 years, he added, noting that the second terminal, with a quay length of 1,600 m and a capacity of 3 million TEUs will be launched based on the application of international operators to meet the growing market for maritime transport in the region.

In total, Tanger Med 2 will span 2,800 meters of quays at -16 and -18 m depth and will have protection works of nearly 5 km, a pond and a median of 160 hours each and will accommodate the largest container ships traveling around the world, said Mr. Arjouan.

In addition, Tanger Med will use the same connection infrastructures (highways, railways, electricity, water) made during the construction of Tanger Med 1, he noted.

The realisation of Tanger Med 2 will make Tanger Med port complex the largest platform of its kind in the Mediterranean and on the African continent, with a total capacity of more than 8 million TEUs, which is able to open new prospects for competitiveness and development in Morocco, stressed port officials at the meeting.
