The EU representative who kicked off on Tuesday the "Small Business Support Program" sponsored by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) expressed the bank's readiness to contribute its experience gained in 20 years of supporting the economic and democratic change in Eastern Europe.

After recalling the importance granted by the EU to the private sector development and upgrading Moroccan enterprises' competitiveness, he noted that the goal is to help enterprises, particularly small and medium-sized ones, to tap opportunities offered by the EU market, of 500 million consumers.

Chairwoman of the General confederation of Moroccan enterprises (CGEM), Miriam Bensalah Chaqroun, explained that SME's which contribute up 40pc of national production and 35pc of exports need technical and financial backing to develop their activities, improve human resources capacities and increase productivity.

She also urged for easing red tape to obtain the EBRD funds and services, securing a fair geographic distribution of these funds, and developing innovative and simplified mechanisms to obtain technical and financial support. Since 2012, the EBRD has invested some 260 million Euros in 14 investments in various sectors (real estate, tourism, agro-food, financial institutions, energy and investment funds).
