Mardi 14 Août 2012

A General strike paralysed Sidi Bouzid today following earlier demonstrations where demonstrators were arrested and strikers demanded their release and back pay which was due to them .The Ennhada government was criticised for having failed to solve increasing unemployment and the regeneration of the industrial wastelands of the east.
Strike paralyses Sidi Bouzid
Sidi Bouzid where the Tunisian revolution started has not seen any uimprovement  in its condition and there have been no visibly effective effort by the Ennhada led government  for the economic regeneration of the region. Yesterday saw the march of women and secular society an essentially middle class urban protest but the anger of the people of Sidi Bouzid is far more dangerous for the interim government. because they are seen to have completely failed to alleviate the wrongs suffered by the workers which include unemployment, high prices, the  marginalization of the central  industrialised regions and corruption. They are accused of betraying the revolution. In fact demonstrators were  reported as saying that the situation was better under Ben Ali. The wrongs that generated the revolution and have not been rectified could cause another uprising  as President Marzouki has pointed out. Failures in public services and electricity in the extreme heat have made matters worse.

Recent government resignations and very public disagreements between President Moncef Marzouki and Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali have undermined confidence. Although thge government did manage to quell  the salafist uprising recently Ennhada's islamist agenda is seen as more important than esuring individual rights and freedoms. This has  perhaps been compounded by inexperience in government. The announcement that the drafy consitition will not now be ready in October begs the question of whether the interim government can hold itself and the people together as the head of the commission for the constitution said first that it would be ready in April and then when uproar ensued he came back and said it would be ready for the Constituent Assembly to vote on in February. The Prime Minister had promised the constitution woulkd be ready in October for a March election.

Tunsia needs stability as the financial situation picks up and FDI returns but it takes time to repair a damaged economy and they do not have enough time.
