Spain says cooperation with Morocco in security "exemplary"

Madrid - Spain's state secretary for security, Francisco Martinez, said cooperation with Morocco in the fight against illegal migration is "exemplary".

"Morocco is closely cooperating" with Spanish authorities in charge of managing migration flows, he told the press Wednesday in Huelva (southern Spain), stressing that the two countries are in "permanent contact" over this issue. 
 
The Spanish official also praised Moroccan authorities' "coordination and action" in fighting illegal migration mafia groups, adding that these efforts have yielded "positive results". 
 
He noted that the number of illegal migrants reaching Spain in makeshift boats has dramatically decreased.
 
Figures of the Spanish interior ministry say the number of candidates to illegal migration, arrested on Spanish coast in 2012 totaled 3, 804 persons against 5,411 in 2011. 
 
Since 2006, the number of illegal migrants reaching Spanish territories has declined by 90.3pc.
