Johannesburg – South African mass-circulation daily "Mail & Guardian" criticized, Tuesday, the position of South Africa regarding the Sahara issue, underlining that Pretoria contradicts most African countries by siding with the polisario separatists.

The political support of South Africa to the so-called rasd (imaginary entity self-proclaimed by the polisario separatists) puts Pretoria in contradiction with more than half of the members of the African Union (AU), says the paper in a report analyzing the role Pretoria is supposed to play after its recent election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

According to the same source, the Sahara issue should define relations between African countries members of the UN Security Council.

The three African countries members of the UN body, namely Côte d'Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, and South Africa will have to form a group worth following, explains Liesl Louw-Vaudran, a consultant at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) in Pretoria.

The analyst, who is supervising the preparation of a report by the ISS on the AU’s Peace and Security Council, highlights that relations between the three countries members of the Security Council will be defined by the position of each country concerning the regional conflict over the Sahara.

Referring to the role of South Africa in the Security Council, Louw-Vaudran says that it depends on the country’s ability to show flexibility.
