The minister, also stressed that the recovery of reserves, especially those in modern deposits, was related to available technology. The potential of various regions were not yet known, noted the Minister citing the area extending from Al-Bayadh to the Algerian-Malian border.

Therefore, the recovery rate varies according to the data, the minister added.

Mr. Yousfi said that Sonatrach had to close a new deposit discovered in 2010 in Ghardaia due to lack of technology necessary for its operation, adding that he had instructed the group in 2011 to reopen after acquisition technologies for its operations .

Similarly to the north which contains large potential oil deposits but because of the rugged terrain, Sonatrach must sign agreements with companies able to exploit this potential to transform them into reliable reserves.

Algeria's hydrocarbon reserves are estimated at 4 billion tons  of oil equivalent (TOE), according to latest figures provided by Sonatrach.

Algeria should undertake exploration work offshore in partnership with foreign companies as of next year, said Mr. Yousfi.

In 2011, the Sonatrach group  made 20 new discoveries, of which 19 were made by its own efforts.

The minister, also stressed that Algeria would require 15 to 20 years to create a nuclear station for generating electricity, adding that Algeria is expected to invest in  the field of peaceful nuclear energy as long as technologies and the means of security people and the environment are assured.
