Sahel: UN envoy Romano Prodi on West Africa tour

Romano Prodi, Special Envoy for the Sahel for the Secretary of the UN Ban Ki-moon began Monday, December 17th a three-day West Africa. After Senegal, Monday, Dec. 17, former President of the Italian Council travelled to Abidjan on Tuesday and arrives on Wednesday in Niamey in Niger.

 He is travelling  with the representative of the UN Secretary General for West Africa, Said Djinnit, according to Jeune Afrique.

The goal of this joint visit is to discuss the challenges facing the Sahel and how to cope,according to the statement, which  adds that this visit comes within the framework of integrated regional UN  discussions on the Sahel  including humanitarian issues, security, governance, human rights and development.
 
The people of the Sahel have been severely affected by the food and nutrition crisis 2011-2012, and it is estimated that 8.5 million people are still food insecure in 2013", said in a statement byt he regional office of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), also based in Dakar.
 
The humanitarian situation is compounded by the impact of the crisis in Mali, which has forced more than 353,000 people to flee for safety," says Ocha which states that $ 1.6 billion (1.2 billion euros ) are required to meet the needs of the area.
 
Romano Prodi and said Djinnit  travelled fromm Abidjan on Tuesday and to Niamey capital of Niger on Wednesday, said in a statement the regional office in Dakar. The two men met with Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara, President of the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS) and  will meet Nigeren President Mahamadou Issoufou.
