Sahara: Morocco Outwits Algeria (French Magazine)

Lundi 14 Décembre 2020

Paris - With the decision of the United States to recognize the Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, Morocco was able to outwit Algeria, the main support of the Polisario, French magazine "Le Point" said on Sunday. The Kingdom also garners an important diplomatic victory. This crowns a course and an attitude, underlined Le Point in an article entitled "Morocco vs Algeria: duel at the top". "With the recognition by the United States of its sovereignty over the Sahara, Morocco scores points against Algeria, now under pressure", wrote the French magazine.

According to Le Point, this crucial decision by Washington to recognize the Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara, an area rich in phosphates and fishery resources (...) would provoke the fury of Algiers, but does it have currently any diplomatic means? Algiers suffers from contested governance in the streets and an absence at the top of the state. A worrying situation when we know the degree of concentration of powers in the Presidency of the Republic. A vacancy that costs points, noted the French magazine. Meanwhile, Morocco, under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI has set up an African diplomacy working on the long term. Trade agreements, infrastructure, financial hubs, religious diplomacy: the construction is methodical", it noted.
