Ban Ki- moon may be close to taking on the role of mediator, to stimulate a solution to this dispute, which has lasted for nearly 40 years.
Sahara: Ban Ki-moon could personally take charge of negotiations
UN sources have mentioned the high probability, that the Secretary General may not assign the role of mediator and director of negotiation between the Government of Abdelilah Benkirane and the separatist Polisario Front.

These sources, quoted by the London Arabic daily Al Aquds Al Arabi ,  explain this new direction by Ban Ki -moon, as a means of influencing the cyclical negotiations on the  Sahara,as international diplomats appointed as mediators  have never been able to weigh heavily enough to move negotiations forward.

The withdrawal of Rabat's confidence in the current envoy Christopher Ross  has confirmed Ban Ki-moon in his new conviction, reports the London newspaper.

UN sources suggest that, Ban Ki-moon will chair the first day of each round of negotiations before delegating management to the rest of the day according to an official from his office.

The Secretary-General feels this measure to be more likely to impose the weight of his institution on the opposing parties, in order to make serious progress towards a viable  final solution to prevent the region from moving towards renewed conflict, as has recently threatened the Polisario Front.
