Qatar continues to invest more in France, has stakes in other territories. According to Le Canard Echainé 6 June the emirate has financially helped the Islamists who seized control of northern Mali since last March.
Qatar is generous to the Islamists in the Sahel
"The insurgents of the MNLA (independence and lay), the movement Ansar Dine, AQIM (Al Qaeda in Islamic Maghreb) and Mujao (Jihad in West Africa) were assisted with dollars frpm Qatar," said Le Canard Echainé,according to Saphir News.

The information has been collected by the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DRM), which reports to the Chief of Staff of the French army information section, said Le Canard Echainé.

The current defence minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, "knows nothing about  bad news arriving from sub-Saharan Africa and there is no involvement of 'our friend in Qatar' says an officer of the General Staff, in the 'capture' of northern Mali by several jihadist movements, "writes the weekly.

The French authorities would therefore be aware of these actions. But diplomacy requires the state to leave it alone. A finding already established under the presidency of Nicolas Sarkozy who was very close to the Emir of Qatar.

There are behind the  scenes of economic issues, because the emirate has designs on oil  to be found in the the Sahel. "Negotiations have already started with discrete Total", the French oil giant, reported Le Canard Echainé.

But if France prefers to keep quiet,  there is this new chance to stretch the  relations between Qatar and Algeria which are difficult , even wider. Indeed, the Mujao, which the emirate would have assisted, holds four Algerian diplomats hostage since April 5.
The assistance provided last year to the revolutionaries of Tunisia, Egypt and Libya had not been to the liking of Algeria, which seems to deplore the growing influence of the small state.
