Marafih Nasser said the Qatari telecom operator Ooredoo former QTel is in pole position to win the contract to purchase 53% of shares in the capital of Maroc Telecom, offered for sale by the French group Vivendi.

Marafih noted that the Moroccan government continues to own 30% of the capital of Maroc Telecom and will "play  a decisive role in choosing the winner of the transaction."

"I think that Qatar has very good relations with Morocco, and has always worked with Ooredoo to play an  important role in the development of the countries where we operate," said the CEO of Ooredoo.

He warns that "political considerations between the two countries are important, and this is something that should be strongly emphasised and given to its viability into account in discussions on the transaction."

He said that Ooredoo is recommended for this transaction by the U.S. bank JP Morgan and said he will not be drawn into a bidding war with its competitors in this race, Etisalat UAE and South Korean KT.
