Obama’s Foreign Policy Agenda -NYT

Lundi 12 Novembre 2012

National security didn’t feature heavily in the presidential election. However President Obama’s legacy, and the country’s future, will be shaped as much by the foreign policy and defense decisions he makes over the next four years as by those on the domestic side, the New York Times(NYT) says in an editorial.
Obama’s Foreign Policy Agenda -NYT
The President should continue his efforts on nuclear weapons reduction with Russia and other  nuclear  nations including China,Pakistan,India and Israel and persuade the US Senate to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

He will also have to defuse the dangerous situation with Iran and continue to apply sanctions. The situation will leadto direct talks  between Washington and Tehran eventually, the NYT notes.

President Obama should declare that the withdrawl of US troops from Afghanistan will be dictated only by the security of the troops, and  that the withdrawal should take no more than a year.

As the threat from Al Qaeda in Mali and the Sahel grows the President will face tough challenges and will have to reconsider the role of drones. Whilst being highly efficient in eliminatingsenior Al Qaeda leaders it has caused
heavy civilian casualties in Pakistan the NYT observes.

America cannot enforce democracy in Arab countries who are transitioning from the repressive past of former dictatorships. It can providefinancial support to leaders of islamist governments butit has to be made clear that this support is dependent on the regime's  adherence oi civil rights and the law.

He should resist calls to intervene in Syria butcontinue to fortify and sustain the opposition which is beginning to unify. He should also persist wit efforts to find a solution to the Israel Palestinian confrontation though it may be tempting to give up on the issue. He should persist with efforts to fint a two state solution the NYT says.

The President has to protect American military interests and ensure access to economic opportunities in the Asia Pacific region which means countering the threat from China. The United States is already shifting many naval and military resources to that region.

Mr Obama has two years before he has to prepare for another election season and he has to decide his prioirities whilst he he has the space and political capital to act the NYT concludes.
