Obama nominates John Kerry as next Secretary of State
Kerry was nominated after the President's first choice for the post ,Susan Rice withdrew her candidacy following concerted opposition from Republican Senators over her comments on the Benghazi attack being a spontaneous demonstration ratherthan a terroist attack.

President Obama said that Senator Kennedy was'the perfect choice'" for the post of Secretary of State given his long experience of foreign affairs with over 30 years serving on  the Senate's Foreign Affairs Committee. He has completed many diplomatic missons for president Obama especially in Afghanistan ,Pakistan and Syria and has wide experience in the Middle East . Commentators suggest that he will head up  efforts on a renewed peace process between Israel and Palestine which have been stalled for sometime.

Hillary Cinton who is still recovering from illness said in a message that "John Kerry has been tested -- in war, in government, and in diplomacy.”

John Kerry was born in Denver, on December 11, 1943, and he spent much of his childhood overseas. He lived in Berlin, and then went to a Swiss boarding school at age 11.After graduating from Yale University in 1966, Kerry was deployed to Vietnam as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. He was a gunboat officer on the Mekong Delta, earning the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts.

He was elected to the senate for the state of Massachusetts in 1984 and ran unsucessfuly in the Presidential elections of 2004. He has been chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee for 5 years and has been an
independent voice on foreign affairs. His leaving the senate may mean that his seat is taken by a Republican which could mean that the democrats loose control of the senate.

President obamasaidthat Senator Kerry's nomination of Secretary of State has crossparty support. The same cannot be said however for Senator Chuck Hagel for the post of Secretary for Defence largely because of his stance on Israel and  this may delay his nomination or President Obama may have to nominate another choice, according to Reuters.
