Northern Mali: MNLA clash with Mujao

Clashes erupted Friday between the components of the Movement for the uniqueness and jihad in West Africa (Mujao) and the National Liberation Movement of Azawad (MNLA) near Gao (northeast of Mali ), sources said

The fighting is taking place in the Menaka near Asongo east of Gao, according to AFP. The MNLA was forced out of Gao in June by Mujao. Ansar Dine andthe MNLA are engaged in separate peace talks with the Ecowas mediator President  Blaise Campaore in Burkina Faso.

Ansar Dine and the MNLA  are reported to have met in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso On Friday. The mediation effort sponsored by Burkina's President Blaise Compaore is aimed at achieving a negotiated settlement
through dialogue. However Burkina Faso's Foreign Affairs Minister Djibril Bassole told reporters that the policy of combining military intervention with the diplomatic process would remain in place.
