No Case of Zika Virus in Morocco, Says Health Ministry

Samedi 30 Janvier 2016

No case of Zika has been reported in Morocco, the Health Ministry announced Friday, adding that there is only a small chance that this disease could spread into the country.

The entomological surveys have revealed that the mosquitoes carrying this disease do not exist in Morocco, the ministry pointed out in a statement following the recent outbreak of Zika virus infection in Latin America.

To prevent a possible spread of the virus to the country, the Health Ministry have taken preventive measures intended to reinforce the epidemiological surveillance system to detect potential cases from affected countries, the statement noted.

The Ministry also urges Moroccan citizens willing to enter the Zika-affected countries to take proper precautions to protect themselves from the mosquitoes carrying the virus, by using mosquito repellents.

The statement stressed that the ministry continues to follow closely the development of the virus' epidemiological situation, in coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO), adding that it will keep the public opinion up to date, regarding the latest development of this disease.

The Zika virus, which was first reported in Brazil in 2014, is a mosquito-transmitted infection related to dengue, yellow fever and West Nile virus, according to WHO. The virus is also associated with higher risk of congenital malformations in newborn when pregnant women are affected.

The World Health Organization has raised a global alert because the disease has affected about 23 countries in the Americas, especially in Latin America.
