New bookshop opens in Algiers

A new shop devoted to books and cultural debates called “Emir Abdelkader Bookshop” was inaugurated on Saturday in Algiers, aiming at providing an extra space for local cultural actions.

After  "Plasti"  which is dedicated to culture and debate, the Algeria  daily news extended its life by giving back the old library of Ben Mhidi street which had been  closed for over 4 years and enhanced it with a  new place for encounter and exchange, APS reports.
 
Present at the inauguration, Azzeddine Mihoubi, director of the National Library has expressed his "joy" and "pride" to see a "new library open when many others are being closed."
 
The manager of this library, Hmida Laayachi wants to create and accommodate around this structure several cultural activities and revive the adjoining space. This is why a partnership with the Apc Algiers center was established to "collect the used book sellers who work in the streets of the capital," he announced.
 
In addition to discussions and meetings organized by the  Algeria Daily News, the new library plans to house the cultural activities of the High Commission for Amazigh (Hca) "including sessions of Amazigh poetry readings on a weekly basis from the month of September, "said Hamida Laayachi who sees the partnership as " a forum for poetry but also for popular literature in Amazigh. "
 
Support for young people in literature or other arts is also part of the objectives of the library, with the assistance of the National Office of Copyright and Related Rights (ONDA), to help young talents produce and distribute their works through support programs implemented by ONDA such as grants for writing.
 
Looking ahead to distribute literature in the Algerian Arabic fashion Hmida Laayachi announced "the creation of an Algerian-Syrian broadcast and distribution in partnership with Syrian publishers. It is also matter of translating Algerian of French literary works and ensure their dissemination in the Arab world ".
 
The library hosts its first event on Sunday to commence a program of discussion meetings scheduled every night for a week. Meanwhile "Plasti" in partnership with the Hca pay homage to the founder of the radio chain 2 for Amazigh, Noureddine Meziane said Noureddine Cheikh will continue this work through poetry readings and the dissemination of extracts of radio drama.
