Mubarak's Chief of staff convicted of corruption
A Cairo court convicted him of using his position to illegally make $7m, the AP reports.  He is the latest of Mubarak's inner circle to be convicted of corruption during his 30 year rule.

Azmi joined the NDP following its establishment in 1978, was elected to the People's Assembly in 1987 and appointed chief of the presidential staff in 1989. He was one of the army officers who supported Egyptian president Anwar el-Sadat in his conflict with Nasserist rivals in 1971. This earned him the post of manager of the office of the presidential chief of staff in 1975.

He became more involved in politics when he was elected in 1979 as deputy chairman of the Cairo Municipal Council.

His overtly critical approach in People's Assembly debates led many observers to dub him "the representative of the NDP opposition wing in parliament".Azmi spoke against the terms of US economic grants to Egypt, corruption in city councils and pollution in Cairo. He was Mubarak's chief of staff from 1989 until Mubarak's resignation in 2011.

Mubarak will face the court on 2 June for a verdict which may sentence him to the death penalty.

The  presidential election in Egypt continues with the run off on 16 and 17 June. Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood won 25.3 % of the vote in the first round with Ahmed Shafiq  a former airforce commander and prime minister winning 24.9 %.

Hamdin Sabbahi,of the  leftist al-Karamah won 21.5% and is demanding a recount citing violations.
