Jeudi 23 Août 2012

In the first exercise of his presidential powers President Mohamed Morsi has issued a decree ending the restrictive Mubarak era press laws which allowed government to hold journalists pending trial for "publication offences"including the charge of "offending the president of the republic."
Morsi ends prosecution for 'press crimes'
The Al-Dostour Editor-in-Chief Islam Afify – recently detained on charges of publishing false information about Morsi has been released from custody. His case had been taken up by human rights organisations including Reporters
Without Borders which condemned Afify's detention., according to Al Ahram.

During the Mubarak era press freedom was rigorously controlled by the state and the ability of journalists to perform
their role and write freely was seriously impaired. Morsi's decision will be taken as a sign that  a real change for personal freedoms is under way in Egypt.

His historic decision will resonate throughout the Arab world where restrictive press laws still prevent freedom of expression.
