Morocco, malaria-free African country- WHO

Geneva - Morocco is among few African countries that succeeded in maintaining zero cases of Malaria, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Tuesday.

In its 2014 World Malaria Report, the WHO cited Morocco among 11 countries that maintained zero malaria cases, noting that several cases were registered in neighbouring Algeria.

The report notes that the forthcoming years will be decisive in the elimination of malaria that continues to plague Africa, which accounts for 90% of deaths from disease in 2013.

At the global level, the report says that malaria mortality rate has decreased by 48% between 2000 and 2013, adding that latest estimates indicate that 198 million cases of malaria occurred globally in 2013 leading to 584,000 deaths.

The report adds that 2.7 billion dollars has been earmarked for malaria control and elimination in 2013.
