Brussels - Morocco is always calling for reviving a new Maghreb order by working to make it an active force in the region, a stabilizing and a security factor in the Sahel-Saharan zone and a structuring actor for African integration, said Youssef Amrani, chargé de mission at the royal office.
Speaking at the panel "Degrade and destroy: Countering Terrorism Abroad", held as part of the 11th Brussels forum of the German Marshall Fund organized in partnership with the OCP Policy center, along with Didier Reynders, Belgian deputy PM and foreign minister, Gen. Gratien Maire, vice chief of staff of the French defense and US senator Jeff Sessions, Amrani described the geopolitical situation in the region as complex and fragmented due mainly to general instability and many security threats in several countries.

He recalled that the solution for conflicts persisting in these countries depends on respecting basic principles as national reconciliation, states' territorial integrity and democracy.

The many security threats are a challenge not only for the region but also for Europe and all the Transatlantic region, he said, adding that facing the current security problems calls for an efficient cooperation to curb terrorism expansion.

Instability prevailing in the region, notably in the Sahel-Saharan region, shows that no state or multilateral actor, regardless of how powerful it is, could impose solutions to solve crises, noting that only a strong, united and integrated Maghreb could curb the terrorist threat in the Sahel, in the Maghreb and in the Mediterranean zone in general.

He insisted on the need to build a zone of peace and shared prosperity according to a logic based on solidarity, cooperation and unity rather antagonism and opposition.
