Beijing - Morocco has several strengths that can be used to transform the country into a hub in the digital sector on the African continent, Huawei vice-president for North-Africa, Philippe Wang, said Monday in Beijing. Speaking to a Moroccan delegation on a visit to a Huawei service center, Wang said Morocco enjoys political stability, economic development and advanced infrastructure compared to other countries in the region, has human skills and houses regional headquarters of several multinationals, in addition to the demographic factor, cultural diversity and language proficiency.

In order to establish itself as a leading hub in the field of digital technologies on the African continent, Morocco must encourage foreign direct investments in the sector, speed-up digital transformation in the industrial fields and promote new technologies job opportunities, in addition to developing innovation capacities and skills, he said. Morocco must also further promote trade and partnerships with regional economies, develop the ICT industry and "green technologies", Wang pointed out.

Huawei entered the Moroccan market in 1999 and had its headquarters in Rabat before opening another regional headquarters in Casablanca in 2018 which covers the North African region, he said. "We are a major partner in digital transformation with all the partners in Morocco”, he said, noting that the Chinese company is cooperating with key players in the telecommunications field, such as" Inwi","Maroc Telecom" and "Orange" to provide solutions and develop telecommunications services.

Huawei is ready to work with these partners to launch the 5G network in Morocco, he added, underlining the group's willingness to work along with Morocco to accompany its efforts to become a leading center in the high-tech sector. Wang also recalled the signing by the company of cooperation agreements with eight Moroccan universities for the training of 12,000 students over a period of three years, and the launch of the program "Seeds for the Future" which enables each year 10 Moroccan students to benefit from a month-long stay in Chinese universities and Huawei Technologies laboratories in the city of Shenzhen. He added that the group is also cooperating with several other partners, including the National Railway Office (ONCF) to which Huawei provides the technologies necessary for high-speed line (LGV) communication services through the GSM-R network, adding that the group is "very proud to have participated in this great project".

The Moroccan delegation includes Morocco’s ambassador to China, Aziz Mekouar, Director General of the Moroccan news agency (MAP), Khalil Hachimi Idrissi, President of the National Tourism Confederation (CNT), Abdellatif Kabbaj, Director of the Department of External Communication of Morocco’s flag carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM), Abdelhakim Chalot, Regional Director of RAM in Beijing, Adil Khalloufi, in addition to several journalists.
