Morocco: citrus exports down 22%

Citrus exports from Morocco will be much lower than expected this season.This is mainly attributed to the cold which inhibited flowering coinciding with their germination peiod.

It is expected that the threshold 400,000 tons for export, while initial estimates provided for over 443,000 tons.

For clementines  the flagship products sector, only 175,000 tons will be shipped whereas last season 2011/2012, exceeded 200,000 tons.

The citrus season had been delayed for 15 to 20 days and the loss of production was further aggravated the situation in the Souss region, including a drop of 33% and in the eastern region, the largest citrus-growing areas of the kingdom.

There is a drop of over 15% for exports in general of Moroccan fruits and vegetables , but the decline is even more visible in the citrus sector with a drop of 22%.
