His Majsty King Mohammed VI has maintained the momentum of his visits to the North of Morocco with a visit to Tetouan on Saturday Tthe new royal initiatives are to improve the living environment of the population, reduce regional imbalances and promote economic development and tourism in the region.

Road infrastructure development, urban upgrading, strengthening networks for water supply and sanitation and promotion of  fisheries are the main objectives of the projects launched or inaugurated by the Sovereign in this area which has great potential to become a center of excellence for integrated developmen, reported MAP..

The monarch celebrated the opening of the final stretch of the Mediterranean bypass (Jebha-Tetouan), a landing point and set up of the fishing village at the Chmaâla Centre for the rural community of Bni Bouzra, as well as the
launch of a water supply and sewerage plant  on the Azla-Oued Lau coastline. Mobilising investment of 2.5 billion dirhams, the construction of the last section of the Mediterranean bypass connecting El Jebha in Tetouan,  a length of 120 km, which significantly cuts the travel time between Tangier and Saidia to approximately  three hours.

It will help to open up the northern coast of the Kingdom, the sustainable development of its provinces, the consolidation of economic centers Tangier-Tetouan and Oujda-Berkane and the emergence of new segments of tourism (beach and mountain). It will also supporting major investment projects in the region, including the free zone services and the new industrial area, in addition to the liberalization of additional capacity for freight traffic and container between Oujda and  the Tangier Med port complex.

The completion of the landing point and set up of the fishing village at the centre of  Chmaâla to the rural community of Bni Bouzra is part of efforts to promote the artisanal fisheries sector, improving the conditions life and work of fishermen and building a better environment for the use and marketing of seafood. Boasting more than 320 fishermen, this project is part of the national coastal management for development and restructuring of the fisheries sector through the creation of integrated poles in their economic and social environment. This project required a budget of 108 million dirhams.
 
The proposed water supply and sewerage for the coastline Azla-Oued Lau, focuses on the implementation of a  wastewater treatment plant at Oued Lau and two other stations in the lagoon treatment centers 'Azla and AMSA. It also consists of the establishment of sewerage along the coastal centers and drinking water supply for the seaside resorts of Azla, Amsa, Tamrabet, Tamernout, Aouechtam and Oued Lau. With a budget of 160 million dirhams, this project is part of the program for upgrading the Oued Lau  Centre and restructuring of its under-equipped neighborhoods.
 
This program is specifically designed to improve the living  conditions of the population with better access to safe water and sanitation and the introduction of various improvementssuch as roads, public lighting, green spaces and the strengthening of public facilities, including the realisation of a mosque, a  socio-athletic complex and a craft center.
