The North African kingdom is regarded by the United States and Europe as an island of stability in a sea of troubles, the International Herald Tribune (IHT) reports.
Morocco: Key US ally in a troubled region
As  violent anti US demonstrations spread over the film "the Innocenceof Muslims" Morocco's demonstration in
Casablanca was small, peaceful and orderly in contrast with its neighbours.Morocco's Foreign Minister Saad Eddine El Othmani was in Washingto to deliver his condolences over the deaths of American consular officials personally.  Secretary of State Hilary Clinton said  Morocco was a leader and a model in the regionand a strong and influential ally for America. King Mohammed VI's skilfull handling of the Arab Spring demonstrations and the advance of democracy   in Morocco has added to this confidence inMorocco as a key ally.

America's interest lies in the fight against terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism, Antonin Tisseron, a security specialist at Europe’s Thomas Moore institute pointed out. “In the context of the assassination of the U.S. ambassador in Libya, the uncertainties about Tunisia and Egypt, and the specter of the ‘Afghanization’ of northern Mali,” he wrote this week, “the kingdom appears to be an important, if not essential partner.” Morocco  i seen as a bulwark against the threat of instability posed by AQIM and Mujao in Northern Mali.

The Pan African francophone  newspaper Le Griot writes that “The U.S. wants to make its Moroccan ally the second player in the strategy it has adopted towards the Arab-Muslim geopolitical space,” wrote Pedro Canales in Spain’s El Imparcial.

“The Wahhabi monarchy in Saudi Arabia and the Alawi monarchy in Morocco form the poles of support for American intervention in the ‘Arab Spring’.”

For  Le Griot, the timing of the strategic dialogue was no accident but one that was dictated by events.

“Viewed as a pivot of stability in a troubled North Africa, Morocco is positioning itself as a central player in a renewal of America’s North African policy, one that is more inclusive and less intrusive.”the timing of this strategic dialogue is not due to chance, but it is dictated by the force of events and the willingness of leaders of both countries to move to a higher speed in their partnership.
