Brussels - The comprehensive and deep free-trade area agreement (CDFTA), currently under negotiation, between Morocco and the European Union, can be a model for similar agreements that the Brussels plans to conclude with other countries of the Euro-Mediterranean region, said the European parliament in a draft resolution.

"This agreement could be used as a model for similar agreements with Tunisia, Jordan, and Egypt" said the EP's international trade committee in a draft resolution on the EU's trade relations with the Euromed zone.

The first round of negotiation for a CDFTA with Morocco started in April 2013 in Rabat. This new agreement will extend significantly beyond the scope of the existing Association Agreement to include trade in services, government procurement, competition, intellectual property rights, investment protection and the gradual integration of the Moroccan economy into the EU single market.

The text also notes Morocco's progress in opening its economic relations with the EU and welcomes progress made to date in negotiations for a CDFTA with Morocco

The committee chairman, a Portuguese socialist European MP also commended the Partnership for Mobility signed between the EU and Morocco last June to facilitate visa issuance to some categories of Moroccan nationals, particularly business operators and academics.

The draft proposal will be submitted shortly to the European parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg.

Since Morocco and the EU started last April negotiations for a first agreement of the kind ever with a Mediterranean country, the two sides held two rounds, with the third scheduled this month in Rabat.
