Morocco Dismantles Drug Trafficking and Illegal Immigration Criminal Network

Samedi 8 Février 2020

Rabat - The central Bureau of judicial investigations (BCIJ) under the general Directorate of territorial Surveillance (DGST) foiled, on Thursday evening, on the basis of precise information provided by the central services of the DGST, a trafficking operation of a large quantity of chira, and dismantled a criminal network of drug trafficking and illegal immigration from the northern coasts of the Kingdom to southern Spain.

The searches carried out as part of this case led to the seizure of 2.4 tons of chira aboard a commercial vehicle, in the Mghougha neighborhood of Tangier, as well as six inflatable boats, three engines, six oars, three jerry cans and five air pumps, says a statement by the BCIJ, adding that the investigations and interventions resulted in the arrest of the mastermind of this network and three other individuals in Tangier suspected of being involved in this criminal network.

Preliminary field research revealed that drug packages were wrapped in such a way as to ensure that they were watertight, adds the same source, noting that the nature and quality of the products seized demonstrates that they were intended for international trafficking by sea.

The suspects have been remanded in police custody to complete the investigation conducted under the supervision of the competent prosecutor's office, with a view to identifying the other persons involved in this criminal network and determining its possible links with other international criminal networks, the same source stresses.

This major operation is part of BCIJ's security efforts to combat all forms of organized crime, particularly international drug trafficking, and to counter this dangerous scourge and its negative impact on society.
