Morocco Announces First Case of Novel Coronavirus (Ministry of Health)

Rabat - The ministry of Health reported, on Monday evening, the first case of the novel coronavirus confirmed at the laboratory of the Pasteur-Morocco Institute, of a Moroccan national residing in Italy.

"Within the framework of the epidemiological monitoring and surveillance system and in implementation of its communication policy, the ministry of Health announces to the public opinion that a first case of the novel coronavirus has been reported and confirmed in the laboratory of the Pasteur-Morocco Institute of a Moroccan citizen coming from Italy, and this at the beginning of the evening of this Monday," the ministry said in a statement.

The state of health of the infected person is stable and does not give rise to concern, notes the statement, adding that the patient is being followed up in the isolation unit at Moulay Youssef hospital in Casablanca, where he will be cared for according to the health measures in force," the same source stresses.

Immediately after receiving the results of the laboratory tests, a joint team of specialists from the national and regional public health emergency operations centres conducted investigations to identify a list of all persons who had been in contact with the patient, to monitor their health status and take preventive measures to halt the spread of the virus in accordance with national and international health safety standards.

The ministry of Health will continue to communicate with the public opinion and keep them informed of all new developments as it has done since the emergence of this global health emergency, the statement concludes.
